New Words

Image
Me oh my, I am behind when it comes to the word scene!   Following up on the top ten gadgets of 2022 search I realized my vocabulary knowledge has really fallen behind. I was shocked to check out the Merriam Webster site and realize in October 2021, 455 new words had been recorded that year.   https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/new-words-in-the-dictionary Here are some of the new tech terms and I was unfamiliar with each one. bit rot : the tendency for digital information to degrade or become unusable over time. This kind of data degradation or corruption can make images and audio recordings distort and documents impossible to read or open. zero-day : of, relating to, or being a vulnerability (as in a computer or computer system) that is discovered and exploited (as by cybercriminals) before it is known to or addressed by the maker or vendor. copypasta : data (such as a block of text) that has been copied and spread widely online. Copypasta can be a lighthearted...

Your Top Ten

Image
The Top Ten Contemporary Christian Songs last week! When the idea of this devotional topic came to mind, I googled "Top Ten Gadgets for 2022". These are some of the items from the first link I clicked. Gel Blaster Air Glass with a monocular waveguide and spark micro projection Gimball camera pocket 2s Hunt 4.0 can be a refillable lighter, rechargeable flashlight or multi-function pry bar and hey it’s IPX-7 water-resistant whatever that is. Fingears is a one size fits all ring that helps solve problems, cope with stress, practice applied kinesiology and just do tricks to fully enjoy life. (I couldn’t make up this stuff.) Gamma Jacket is a special jacket infused with Graphene-a nano-lattice, hard as a diamond, but thin material. It has a smart customizable built in heater powered by a power bank. Here’s a perk supposedly..it’s antimicrobial and anti-oder.   Sorry I gave it up after those. My brain was exhausted trying to comprehend most of those ter...

Get it Sweetie

Image
We need to be able to laugh at ourselves and that is just what I was doing during March Madness. My mama called everyone "Sweetie". My parents even named their little sailboat "The Sweetie".  As I was watching some of the basketball games, when the boys would go to the foul line, I heard myself say to the players, "Get it Sweetie". I've become my mother. As I said that Sunday night, I thought about what I was saying "Get it."  Oh friends, aren't there people we love so deeply that we want them to get it  spiritually?   I Googled "What is the gist of the Gospel of Jesus"" You, know...what is it we want people to get? First popped up, "The Gospel message is to believe in Christ, and to love others ." Next "When asked which commandment was the most important, Jesus said, “ Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind . This is the first and great commandment...

No Need to Clean Up

Image
I was chatting with a group of grandmothers and we were all laughing how we have learned there  is not need to clean up before the grandchildren come to visit.  Let the crumbs fall (well maybe until the ant start to march).  There are clean up benefits to having a dog around the table. A friend was sharing how she was discussing baptism with her adult son, but he told her there were things in his life he felt he needed to clean up before he went forward with baptism. She shared how he was missing the point, we can come to Jesus when we are a total mess. but God shows his love  for  us in that while we were still  sinners , Christ  died   for  us.  Romans 5:8 "To believe our sin is greater than God’s ability to forgive borders on arrogance….Jesus lived and died to bring us complete, freedom-giving, peace-producing, joy-filling, heavenly forgiveness that restores us to intimacy with our heavenly Father.  In the Lord’s p...

Who Was and Is To Come

Image
While in Arizona with family we were amazed at the size of some of the cactus. What amazes you?  What causes you to stand in awe? Here is an amazing thought. Jesus was, He is, and He is to come! Look!  He is coming with the clouds. Everyone will see him, even the ones who stuck a sword through him. All people on earth will weep because of him. Yes, it will happen!  Amen. The Lord God says,  "I am Alpha and Omega, the one who is and was and is coming. I am God All-Powerful!" Revelation 1:7-8 The Song "Revelation" Kari Jobe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FrhDJa3XCM

A Healing Process

Image
Earlier in the week I read the heart wrenching story in the link below and felt the Spirit urging me to share it with a group of believers for the purpose of “equipping”.  Our relationships spread around the world and it doesn’t seem that a week goes by where we are not called upon to pray for someone in distress. Two verses from this story were the same verses given to us when our son was in a tragic car wreck. The car flipped 4 times and left him trapped inside with a broken neck.  There are many wives and mamas in the Ukraine who could find encouragement from God’s Word, as well as the spouses, parents and children of our military personnel.  May we not forget the parents of children in various kinds of captivity…addiction, abuse, depression, misdirection, sex trafficking… God, we lift your name on high!  Your Word tells us again and agin to cry out to You. Please fill each person reading this, those whom You have created, with Your Holy Spirit and equip...

Wait til the Pollen Falls

Image
The March temperatures have been in the 70's and it's oh so tempting to pull out the patio furniture and beach toys, put up the dock umbrellas, buy plants and ferns and stock the boat house! Sensing my temptations, in a kind voice my husband said, "It might be wise to wait until the pollen falls." One acronym for wait is "Why Am I Tempted? Oh, how we can get ahead of ourselves in the wait.   We have had to do some unwanted waiting these past couple years due to "the germ" and government restrictions.  We have dear friends who have just embarked on a trip abroad.  They were required to have "germ" testing done within a specified number of hours before their flight.  The husband's results came back negative and they patiently waited for the wife's results, while taking the first leg of their trip to Atlanta.  Calling the testing site to see what the hold up was they were told the test had been faulty and would have to be retaken.  Hurr...

He Prepares a Table

Image
Setting a pretty table and hosting a gathering around a table brings me great joy! December 6th our dining room table was set for fifteen. We were ready to welcome my prayer group and their husbands for our Christmas dinner celebration.  Three days before my husband had been feeling a little less than 100%, so we decided he would not eat with us, but stay in the bedroom. The day before the dinner he came home from church and went straight to bed.  We had to make a decision not knowing what kind of "germ" he had, so we cancelled the dinner. After going for a test it was the right call to have made and but it shut down our home for the month of December as I caught the "germ" after him. There is a table set for us in heaven and no germ can hinder us from coming. In David's beloved Psalm 23 we see the Lord attending to David's every need. Likewise, God provides and protects us. Paul reminds us in Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to...

It's A Good Morning

Image
The view our son in Utah wakes up to each morning. Another Monday confronts us and we have  no idea what this week will hold, but we know God is in control and up to good in a way that will bring Him glory.  So, let's go with God. Morning was His idea! God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning , the first day. Genesis 1:5 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning ; great is your faithfulness . Lamentations 3:22-23 The Songs  Below are several genres of music to get your morning going!   It’s A Good Morning- Mandisa (Christian) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB0RS_Ai1gQ Or It’s a Beautiful Morning- The Rascals (Beach music) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJqjlFGZxtE Or Singing in the Rain-Good Morning (Good ole musical.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu6--WBPBHo

The Goodness of God

Image
Happy Saturday.  God is taking me wonderful places with this song.  Set aside 7 minutes to be swept into His presence. If you journal, write down the times you know you've been held in God's hand...the times He's seen you through the fire...the times He's been closer than anyone else and the times He's been an amazing friend. The Song  Goodness of God  Jenn Johnson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3t6CdeiN1M Lyrics I love You, Lord  For Your mercy never fails me All my days, I've been held in Your hands From the moment that I wake up  Until I lay my head Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God And all my life You have been faithful  And all my life You have been so, so good With every breath that I am able  Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God I love Your voice  You have led me through the fire In the darkest night  You are close like no other I've known You as a Father  I've known You as a Friend And I have lived in the goodness o...

What Does That Mean

Image
Quite often I will see a television commercial and turn to my husband and say, "What does that mean?  I don't understand or even comprehend what product the ad was touting. Two sports figures made dumbfounding quotes that we get a chuckle out of repeating. "There's going to be some property torn up tonight!" Kirby Smart (Football Coach GA after national championship victory.)  "The ceiling is the roof."  Michael Jordon (Addressing a UNC crowd at a basketball game. Hmm?  Did he mean the sky's the limit?) With Easter approaching I find myself hanging out in the gospels and see Jesus' disciples pondering, "What does he mean?" During His Farewell Discourse in John 16:16-19 Jesus sounds like a magician as he is trying to drive home the confusing point.."You will see me, then you won't see me, then you will see me again." "A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.”  So so...

Extravagant Love Poured Out

Image
Thankful for this gal's extravagant love. Have you ever been the recipient of extravagant selfless love?  Last week I was snuggling our three year old grandson, who was cold after a bath and putting on his pjs.  I wrapped a blanket around him, held him in my lap and held a drink to his lips so he could stay wrapped up.  He looked at me and said, "You are my sweetheart."  WOW. I felt loved. Jesus wraps his loving arms around us!  He is our sweet heart! Read of Extravagant Love in: Luke  7:36-50 A Pharisee invited Jesus to have dinner with him. So Jesus went to the Pharisee’s home and got ready to eat.  When a sinful woman in that town found out that Jesus was there, she bought an expensive bottle of perfume.  Then she came and stood behind Jesus. She c ried and started washing his feet with her tears and drying them with her hair . The woman kissed his feet and poured the perfume on them. The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw...

It's A Mystery

Image
Our little "mystery" man! Currently, his perplexing mystery is why he can't marry his beautiful cousin whom he adores. Often, when you ask this three year old a question such as "Where is your water bottle?  Where did  you put the remote?"  he will reply, "It's a mystery!"  I'm thankful God is a mystery, for if we could figure out his ways he wouldn't be the all-powerful God, all knowing God that he is! Let this quote take you deep as you ponder where you stand on the reality of all of God's mysteries, most which will not be unfolded this side of heaven. "When we were children most of us were good friends with mystery. The world was full of it and we loved it. Then as we grew older we slowly accepted the indoctrination that mystery exists only to be solved.  For many of us, mystery becomes an adversary: unknowing becames a weakness.  The contemplative spiritual life is on ongoing reversal of this adjustment. It is a slow and somet...

Dance Partner

Image
I've been dancing with this man for over 45 years. (Mostly in our kitchen or alone on our dock.) Following my stroke it became evident that the sequencing area of my brain had been damaged.  Activities with two or more steps where and continue to be difficult/exhausting to carry out brain wise.  At the beginning of the rehabilitation process I utilized post it notes to remind me how to do things as simple as dressing.  Cooking was always a delight to me, but now there is a higher success rate and less brain frustration when another person helps, by calling out the recipe step by step and helping to lay out ingredients. A speech therapist friend suggested I play simple piano pieces or knit basic patterns to help my brain relearn the sequencing process. For over twenty years our daughter was a music therapist in hospitals playing her harp and I remembered the impact music therapy has on patients.  Stability and balance were a challenge for me, so I called a frie...

Kind Words

Image
A birthday dinner. Last week we had the pleasure of gathering with half of our family for a spring break getaway and the opportunity to celebrate my husband's birthday.  We were dining in a lovely hotel restaurant which happened to be part of a chain in which our son in law is employed.  A lovely woman, who holds an executive position at this resort came over to speak to our son in law, but in doing so she engaged each one of the 13 of us individually placing value on our lives.  What totally blew me away was the time she took to approach the far end of the table where the 7 grandchildren sat and ask each of these children what plans they had for their lives.   At first the children had the deer in the head light look.  Then I said, "She with her what you want to do with the rest of your life!"  The simpler version...What do you want to be when you grow up?  Everyone of them shared something very unique...a blacksmith, a cartoonist, an engineer ...

Just Jump!

Image
What stirs apprehension in your life?  Petting an animal?  Tasting something new? Jumping into a body of water?  Going into a dark room?  Skydiving? Walking across a swinging bridge? There were two definitions  for apprehension: " anxiety or fear that something bad or unpleas ant will happen; understanding; grasp, comprehension." Because I know Him and his story, because I love him, because I see how much richer and peaceful life is with him, I can't grasp why people wouldn't just give Jesus their love and their lives. The apprehension for some comes from the fear of surrendering control of their life choices to be in line with those of Christ. For other, possibly it's a lack of understanding, grasping and comprehending  the depth of God's love for us and how much better a life lived in that love can be.  Hmm. Maybe it's like changing a lifestyle after a heart attack.  The doctor explains you must stop drinking, change your diet, add consis...
