Flush the Flesh
In the ESV Romans 8:8 states "Those who are in the flesh cannot please God."
I'm doing a journaling challenge where you are given a passage to write down every day. As I was writing Romans 8:1-8 I felt a little bit like I was listening to some present day politicians who make no sense. I switched over and read in the CEV, which was a little less repetitive in rhetoric as to what rules us whether we live in the flesh or the Spirit
Below, I've taken this passage and laid it out in talking points to meditate upon and use as a spiritual checklist.
If you belong to Christ Jesus, you won’t be punished.
The Holy Spirit will give you life that comes from Christ Jesus and will set you free from sin and death. The Law of Moses cannot do this, because our selfish desires make the Law weak.
But God set you free when he sent his own Son to be like us sinners and to be a sacrifice for our sin. God used Christ’s body to condemn sin. He did this, so that we would do what the Law commands by obeying the Spirit instead of our own desires.
People who are ruled by their desires think only of themselves. Everyone who is ruled by the Holy Spirit thinks about spiritual things. If our minds are ruled by our desires, we will die. But if our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace
Our desires fight against God, because they do not and cannot obey God’s laws. If we follow our desires, we cannot please God.
The two big takeaway questions are: To whom do we belong and by what are our minds ruled?
