Actions of Dedication
On Mother's Day we had the privilege of attending our grandson's baby dedication. The pastor was clear in his explanation that this was not like baptism when someone professes their faith in Christ, but rather a ceremony where parents make a commitment to God to bring their child up in the training of the Lord. It was refreshing to see so many families taking the spiritual aspect of their parenting roles so seriously.
Looking the word dedicate up in the dictionary, definitions refer to: devotion to the worship of a divine being; to being set apart; and to being committed to a goal or way of life.
Scouring Biblegateway the NIV listed 39 Old Testament verses on dedicating things, but only one New Testament reference. The day we became owners of Shiloh, I knelt by a big tree and dedicated the property and our care and use of it, to the Lord. It's been a wild ride! Besides our homes and children, what can we dedicate to the Lord? What can we set apart and be committed to using to bring glory to God?
Marriages, money, jobs, vehicles, voices, church service, prayer life, daily walk, etc.
Proverbs 20:25 states: It is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one's vows.
Obviously, we are to take seriously our actions of dedication.
