God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

It's 2:30 in the morning and sleep will not come. With the barrage of prayer requests we have been receiving daily, including seven deaths of people we know personally, outside church, in the past two weeks I find myself realizing I must trust in the strength of the Lord, lay these burdens down before Him and sing praise for my Savior reigns and is alway up to good and victory.

As I tossed and turned the middle of the night message was clear. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".  I googled the lyrics and up popped this question "What is meant by 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'?

"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is actually an 'old English' phase which means something entirely different.  The title of the song isn't about resting. In the language of that day REST meant 'to make' and Merry  meant 'mighty' or 'powerful'. Thus, the title of this song actually meant "God Make  you MIGHTY, Gentlemen."

Oh dear friends what a powerful message for believers!  For those of us who are battling grief and loneliness, for those waiting for those scan results, surgery dates, and rounds of chemo to end or our loved one to come out of the hospital or rehab so we can hold them again my prayer right now is for God to make us mighty in the wait!

Christ was born to save us all from Satan's power, so lift high the name of Jesus and find comfort and joy!  Amen

Lyrics God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Let nothing you dismay Remember Christ our Savior Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's pow'r When we were gone astray
Oh tidings of comfort and joy Comfort and joy Oh tidings of comfort and joy
In Bethlehem, in Israel This blessed Babe was born And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn The which His Mother Mary Did nothing take in scorn
Oh tidings of comfort and joy Comfort and joy Oh tidings of comfort and joy
Fear not then, said the Angel Let nothing you affright This day is born a Savior
Of a pure Virgin bright To free all those who trust in Him From Satan's pow'r and might
Oh tidings of comfort and joy Comfort and joy Oh tidings of comfort and joy
God rest ye merry gentlemen Let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's pow'r When we were gone astray
Oh tidings of comfort and joy Comfort and joy Oh tidings of comfort and joy
