Don't you love how you can read the same passage over and over and learn an entirely new lesson?
This week as I was dabbling in the Easter passages I came to this one.
Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him. John 12:9-11
What struck me was how the chief priests were not able to rejoice in the miracles of Jesus. They were so threatened by Jesus' victories, that instead of coming alongside him and learning from him, they wanted to kill him. And in this case, kill Lazarus as well.
Our world is still like this. In the business and political world, the world of academia, and the social sports arenas....people long for the lime light for themselves and will go to great lengths to extinguish what they see as the competition.
I recall the movie You've Got Mail where a large book chain comes to a town and puts a little bookshop out of business. The little shop owner ends up unknowingly falling in love with the owner of the large chain and finds not only a role for herself in his business, but she finds love.
Oh that we could learn to pool our resources and gifts and find strength, security and joy in our differences.
