Holly and the Ivy

December 13-14
Sitting in a car in Florida with a pastor’s wife from my past, who had invited me to their beach condo, I looked up at the moss hanging from the trees of northern Florida.  I said, “Doesn’t that remind you of how Jesus has us covered?”
She looked at me and said, “You just see Jesus everywhere don’t you?”

I do, when I take the time to look.

Kirk Cameron has a movie out called Saving Christmas.  While it has a good message, more geared to adults, you might want to have a hit of caffeine before you go.  We went after a big buffet lunch and my husband was snoring shortly into the movie.  The emphasis of this film is on remaining joyful at Christmas and seeing Jesus in everything from Santa, to gift giving, to feasting. More importantly, the message stresses the importance of our attitudes as ambassadors for Christ.

This weekend let's look at the symbolism of two evergreen plants,  holly and ivy, as expressed in this song.

This is a little lengthy. It is done by a children's choir, but gives you a taste of the tune.

The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown
Chorus
Of the rising of the sun, and the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing of the choir.

The holly bears a blossom, as white as lily flower
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, to be our sweet Saviour
Chorus
The holly bears a berry, as red as any blood
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to do poor signers good.
Chorus
The holly bears a prickle, as sharp as any thorn
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ on Christmas Day in the morn
Chorus
The holly bears a bark, as bitter as any gall;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, for to redeem us all.
Chorus
The holly and the ivy, now both are full well grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown
Chorus
