Honeycomb
Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, making people happy and healthy.
Proverbs 16:14
Kind words are like honey— they cheer you up and make you feel strong.
Proverbs 16:14
We often save our foul moods and unkind words for our family when we are worn out or wounded. We see them as a safe spot to unload, but be that as it may, words wound. Our patience is known to run weary with those we do life with the longest, be it at work or at home. This is especially true amongst siblings/relatives. We figure they are stuck with us and will eventually forgive our shortcomings, but in the midst of the motion we can bring great damage to those relationships and emotional harm to those we love.
In 1992 we watched an ice skating movie called "The Cutting Edge" with our children. In the movie when the hockey player turned figure/pair skater messes up on a stop the girl skater snidely says "toe pick" referencing the unique part of a figure skate. "Toe pick" became my code word for "get your elbows off the dinner table". By quietly saying "toe pick" I didn't have to embarrass the children in a public setting.
With a hoard of cousins hanging out at Shiloh I realized I was constantly having to say, "Let's use words that breath life into one another and bring encouragement instead of despair." Whew, such a mouthful to have to spew out, so I thought about Proverbs 16:14 and told them I was just going to say, "Honeycomb!"
Two days later we were in Michaels Craft Store and at the checkout counter was a display box filled with little packs of Honeycomb candy! I bought three for the grands who were with me and told them to stick these in their wallets as a reminder to always have "sweet" speech!
