Become Servants
May 9-10
In Matthew 20, we find the mother of James and John being a pushy mom. She is requesting prime seating for her boys (the left and right) when Jesus rules. The tactic was not pleasing to the other 10 disciples whose mamas weren't around to speak up for them.
"When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, 'You know that the rules of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many,'" Mt. 20:24-18
On Revive Our Hearts this past week I heard Jani Ortlund speaking on motherhood. One day she stated that motherhood is living a life of servitude. It's true, but it's also living like Jesus.
So, to all you mothers out there, young and old, keep on keeping on, and serve your children with joy.
God appreciates all of our actions, cleaning up boo boos, changing diapers, getting grime out from under fingernails, shoving in baby food, nursing in the middle of the night and praying without ceasing every day as long as they are on this earth.
For so many of you, who do not have children of your own, I thank you for putting up with our tales of drudgery and for selflessly praying for our children and supporting us when we are overwhelmed. An additional thanks to those of you who have chosen to work in our schools/Sunday schools/day cares and so tirelessly invest in the lives of children.
