International Day of Older Persons October 1

At a recent church luncheon our 10 year old grandson showed an older church member great respect by rubbing her back while she shared a thought. She was emotional and struggling to get her thoughts out. It stirred his heart to compassion.

There seems to be a day set aside to celebrate everything.  My parents used to say that was to keep Hallmark in business. I think my parents would shake their heads to know there is "donut day".

While working on a piece to teach children to respect their elders, I came to find out that the United Nations established October 1st as "International Day of the Older Persons"!

At our Fall Festival, October 1st one of the craft projects us for the kids is to paint little pumpkins. With that project the parents will get this note below.

Today is "International Day of the Older Person."  Please have your child give the pumpkin they have painted and the card they have stenciled away to an older person who just might need a hug along with the gift.

The first step in teaching your children to have respect  for their elders is to remember that our children learn by example.  Do your children see you selflessly caring for senior adults and making time to invest in their lives?

Author Mike Fabarez wrote: “Consider Leviticus 19:32, Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly. Many would consider standing when an older person enters the room as some kind of stodgy formalism or just a cute southern tradition, but according to Leviticus 19, such gestures of respect are essential for those who desire to ‘revere the Lord’ (v.32b). God tells us that the elderly among us should be granted our esteem, if for nothing else, because God has granted them grace to live to a ‘good old age’ (Gen.25:8).

Of course, in most cases there is much more for which they should be respected. Their many years of life-experience and accumulated wisdom should be a cause for our sincere expressions of respect (Job 12:12). So the next time a senior walks into your presence, may God’s value of the aged prompt you to sincerely convey your kindness and admiration.”

Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days. Job 12:12
