Seekers
How would you respond if someone asked you, "What are you seeking?"
There was a some seeking going on at the time of Jesus' birth.
Some of the definitions of the word seek in Merriman-Webster are: to go in search of; to ask/request; to try to discover; to attempt; to try to acquire.
Here's a fun challenge. With honesty in your heart go back in 10 year increments and ask yourself, what was I seeking in my teens, my twenties, my thirties, etc.
My mind flashed back to seeking the presence of my earthly father. It was usually in want of something. Those desires held a wide range over the years. A hug, a puppy, snow skis, math help, constructing something (from a school project, to a playhouse for our children, to guidance with a home remodel). My wants and desires changed as I saw my father age and acknowledged he wouldn't be here forever.
I am so thankful he lived less than an hour away and every few days I could go see him, give back the hugs he'd given me, take him something yummy to eat realizing all the ways he had fed me, sit in his presence and think about all the years he sat watching and supporting me in many sports endeavors (he was faithfully in the stands), verbalize to him how deeply I appreciated all the love he poured into me and my family and attempt to bring him joy sharing about our children. He was always available to me, answering every call and I wanted to always be available to him.
On the flip side there is my relationship with my heavenly Father. The one who formed, shaped and breathed life into me. Heart tug. If I charted out all the times I've sought Him over the years, the wanting him to see me through something column is probably much longer than the just wanting to be with Him out of love and gratitude column. It has taken a lot of years to form a heart of gratitude.
Below is just a taste of what God's Word teaches us about seeking.
Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually! 1 Chronicles 16:11
You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13
The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. Psalm 14:2
I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me. Proverbs 8:17
"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened." Matthew 7:7-8
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6
