Historic Tour of The Homestead Resort

Companies like "Resort Leaders" are "international talent sourcing platforms which connect with hospitality students around the globe" and place them in resorts on 6 or 12 month contracts.  Have you hit the ski slopes in the winter or lounged by a beautiful resort pool and found the majority of the employees to be young, energetic and cautiously maneuvering English as its their second language?  They are hospitality students!

On a recent resort stay our waiter was from India.  The check in personnel were from Hungary and Spain. A coffee shop worker was Japanese. And the young man clearing tea cups from afternoon tea had a name 15 letters long and couldn't understand a word this southern girl said, so I'm clueless as to his nationality.  Without pulling out a cell phone in these situations, what is the greatest translator?  It's a SMILE!  Add the words "Thank you" and they appear to be understood.

Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.

Colossians 3:14

Motioning the English speaking maitre d' (who was older and not a hospitality student, but a 13 year veteran in the hospitality industry) to our table, I inquired as to where he was from and what locations within this hotel chain he was looking forward to visiting the most.  He shared his answers and then said in a tone of disbelief,  "Wow. That was the easiest question/issue I've had to respond to."

As he walked away, I was the one rather shocked and saddened with the realization of the demands we put on people in the service industry. Truth be told, I'd grumbled jokingly to an employee the day before, but in reality I was a bit miffed by the oversight of an expected curtesy.

Offer hospitality without grumbling.  1 Peter 4:9

Ugh, our expectations can be so high. The day before I'd grabbed a quick "To go" bite from a shelf in the coffee shop and quickly checked out.  After finishing my salad and tossing my plasticware in the trash I became so convicted that I had not even looked at the girl checking me out.  Going back, I asked her name and apologized for my neglect. She said, "Oh, that's alright."  I said, "No actually it's not.  You are valuable and should be acknowledged and appreciated."

With God there are no language barriers, nor issues of the heart, which go misunderstood or unseen by Him. Please forgive me Lord for not seeing everyone as valuable and worthy to be seen, even if they are stingy! 😉 I, myself, have been less than gracious at times. In Jesus' name. Amen
