Empty or Full

Every time I see a can of PAM I chuckle at the remembrance of a time when we were housing a couple British professional tennis players who were in our area for a tournament.  These young girls were delightful and so kind to our children.  I was making them pancakes for breakfast one morning and sprayed the skillet with PAM.  One exclaimed, "Fat in a can? I've never seen such a thing." I often pick up the can and say to myself, "Fat in a can!"

While these two cans look identical, there is a huge difference. One is empty and one is full.  The empty one is of no use to me, but the one that is filled up has a very specific purpose it can perform in my kitchen or out on our grill.  God has created each of us with a specific purpose.

For God is working in you, giving you desire and the power to do what pleases him.  Philippians 2:13

We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to  his purpose for them.  Romans 8:28

"When you study great movements of God from Scriptures, they all have something in common: they begin with a small group of people who, despite the mockery of others, trust that God will do exactly what He says He will do.  And when He finds them, He strongly supports their calling."  Chip Ingram

For the eyes of the Lord go to and fro throughout the whole earth, that He may strongly support those whose hearts are completely His.  2 Chronicles 16:9

God is our equipper. He doesn't expect or desire for us to carry out his calling on our own.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.   John 14:26

In order to pass an academic class, occupational requirement, course or play in an athletic event you must study the text, listen to the lectures, and memorize information for the test/competition.  Yet, when it comes to everyday life or accepting a call from the Lord, we tend to go into "I can do this" mode.

God wants to be in relationship with us.  He has plans and purposes.  How often to we study the Bible. Memorize scripture, listen to what God is speaking into our hearts and minds?

Look what can happen.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.  Acts 1:8

And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.  Acts 4:31

And the disciples were filled with JOY and with the Holy Spirit.  Acts 13:52
