Desire

A neighbor and church friend has been visiting her son in Hawaii! Isn't this photo from her like a dream?

Sitting with one of my favorite teenagers he said, "May I ask you something?"  "Anything," I replied.  The question,  "So, we are to spend eternity in heaven, right? How are we to be happy and content forever? That's a long time."

What a great thought process.  At 16 years old, we are always looking forward to something...school being out, getting a driver's license, making a sports team, winning an election, getting a job, meeting the one, moving away, starting a family, etc.  But once you get to heaven, which is supposed to be the ultimate, what do you long for in FOREVER.

My response was this.  God created us with desire.  He created us to want, to hope, to long for someone or something. We long for delicious food, comfort, excitement, success, romance, sex, security, a Hawaiian sunset, and many other worldly desires.  But what that longing emotion was truly created for was God and can only be satisfied by being in His presence, here now and in eternity.

"You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory an honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will there were created and have their being."  Revelation 4:11

Colossians 1:16 reiterates this point: "All things were created by him and for him."

The discussion continued as I reminded this young man that our minds cannot comprehend what heaven will be like, because it is nothing we have ever experienced.  We talked about there being streets of gold, no night, and colors we have never seen.

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him."  I Corinthians 2:9

“Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.” 1 John 3:2

"We shall indeed be changed".  1 Corinthians 15:51

Let's ask ourselves..."What is it that I desire most?"
