Get to Know the Man Part 1

Teddy Scott & Scottie Scheffler at The Masters

There are many people who find the sports world repulsive, so before they shut me out and stand in judgement, I hope they hear me out. Sports, just like the arts and sciences, have offered individuals escapes from tragic home lives and provided education and employment opportunities that may not have come otherwise. God has created us all uniquely with gifts and talents and with a propensity to find enjoyment in a wide spectrum of activities.  Hopefully, these avenues lead us to the Lord!

My knowledge of the golfing world is VERY limited.  I've never played the game and find no enjoyment in Putt Putt. In an attempt to keep my post cardiac ablation husband calm, I watched two days of The Masters with him.  Let the Googling begin!  We learned a lot about tournament rules and the Augusta National Country club's secret membership list!

The only player we had much background knowledge on was Tiger Woods. Scottie Scheffler, a 25 year old from Texas, was in the lead and after a commentator said, Scottie met his caddy, Teddy Scott, at a Bible study, he was my pick to follow.  The more I got to know about this young man, his wife and family the more I liked him and found myself cheering and praying for him!

After seeing Teddy Scott weeping at the green coat ceremony, I was curious about him as well.  This 50 year old loves the Lord and after caddying for Bubba Watson, another believer, for 15 years they decided to part ways. Teddy's plan was to retire from caddying and just teach golf.

God had other plans!  It sounds as if Teddy Scott is a God ordained mentor for Scottie Scheffler.

Bubba Watson said this about himself and these fellow PGA Bible Study members.   "All three of us are trying to do the same things.  We're trying to be the best husband we can be, trying to be the best parent we can be. Scottie is not a parent yet, but he will be at some point.  We're tying to do the same goals in life, and then golf just gets in the way.  If you get your life somewhat in order, maybe a few more putts will go in."

All three of these men have said, Golf is not first in their lives.  Yup! It's all about the J.O.Y.

Jesus Others You

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself."  Matthew 22:37-39
