To Be...Brothers



The end of April these two will be getting a baby brother.

February 23
Siblings!  Life can be a lot with them! A lot of joy, a lot of love, a lot of reliability, yet also a lot of jealousy and jostling for position.  It's been that way from the beginning of time.

Hebrews 13:1 says, "Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters."  Hmm.

Like Cain and Abel?
"The Lord said, 'What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.'"
Genesis 4:10

Like Jacob and Esau?
"Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him.  He said to himself, "The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.'"
Genesis 27:41

Like Joseph's brothers?
"Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more."
Genesis 37:5

The New Testament is more encouraging where we see brothers called together to serve the Lord.
"These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John;"  Matthew 10:2

Oh wait...Jesus' brothers thought he was a nut.

Jesus sets the stage for what we will learn is a deep brotherly love between believers.

"Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, 'Your mother and brother are standing outside, wanting to see you.'  He replied, 'My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice.'"
Luke 8:19-21

Paul heard God's word and put it into practice and encouraged the brother and sisters of the faith again and again.

"Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice!  Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you." 2 Corinthians 13:11

"Therefore, my brothers ad sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!...Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things." Philippians 4:1, 8

Paul also taught the importance of providing for our relatives.

"Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."  1 Timothy 5:8
