A Change of Plans

Gotta love these Andrews long snappers.

Most of you know we are a football family.  My husband was a four year letterman who was the long snapper for UNC 1972-1976.  He later coached middle school football for 19 years at a local private school. All five of our sons played for him at some point. Our fifth child was the back up long snapper for UVA and now his son is playing high school ball.

In the game of football you have to be prepared for a change of plans. You never know the next play coming at you and have to make immediate adjustments.  Players are injured, substitutions are made which can change things up.  Coaches are fired or take jobs mid season, which really presents a change of plans.

It's the holiday season and plans seem to change daily.  Your table may be set for ten and you learn four more are coming or a family of four calls last minute sharing someone is sick and will not be making the trip. A sweet, older, widow friend had 27 family members coming for Thanksgiving day here at her lake home. The week before she was  hospitalized with pneumonia and COVID. I spoke with her the day before Thanksgiving and she was holding to the hope she would be discharged and would tuck herself away in her bedroom and someone could bring her a plate. Love her attitude.

God in his mercy made a change of plans (I'm certain He knew he'd need one from the beginning of time) when sin entered the world. He made a way that while we were yet sinners, Christ would die for us.

"...but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence.” Ephesians 1:7-8

I was having one of my middle of the nights where sleep would not come. Whew! My mind was a wandering, mostly related to the festivities and fun I wanted to provide for our family Thanksgiving week.

Finally, I said, "Lord, why can't I sleep?"  He said, "Because I need you to listen to me!"

I started seeking not only His face, but His voice. The song "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" came to mind. When I got to the lyric "In the light of his glory and grace"  I was remembering it as "In the light of his mercy and grace. That's when He said, "Write a devotional called 'A Change of Plans' there are people, you included, who need to go with the flow this holiday season and rejoice, trusting me even when plans change."

Jesus is the real game changer!

O soul are you weary and troubledNo light in the darkness you seeThere's light for a look at the SaviorAnd life more abundant and free
Turn your eyes upon JesusLook full in his wonderful faceAnd the things of earth will grow strangely dimIn the light of his glory and grace
His word shall not fail you he promisedBelieve him and all will be wellThen go to a world that is dyingHis perfect salvation to tell

Pick your genre or sing it from your heart like your grandmama did.
